It is on the small Qatari-Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula<\/a>. Its only land border is with Saudi Arabia<\/a> to the south, with the rest of it’s territory surrounded by the Persian Gulf<\/a>. A strait in the Persian Gulf separates Qatar from the nearby island country of Bahrain<\/a>, as well as sharing maritime borders<\/a> with the United Arab Emirates (UAE)<\/a> and Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following Ottoman<\/a> rule, Qatar became a British protectorate in the early 20th century until gaining independence in 1971. Qatar has been ruled by the House of Thani since the early 19th century. Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani<\/a> was the founder of the State of Qatar. Qatar is a hereditary monarchy<\/a> and its head of state is Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani<\/a>. Whether it should be called a constitutional<\/a>[12]<\/a><\/sup>[13]<\/a><\/sup> or an absolute monarchy<\/a>[14]<\/a><\/sup>[15]<\/a><\/sup>[16]<\/a><\/sup> is a matter of opinion. In 2003, the constitution was overwhelmingly approved in a referendum, with 100% in favour.[17]<\/a><\/sup>[18]<\/a><\/sup> As of early 2017, Qatar’s total population was around 2.6 million: 313,000 Qatari citizens and 2.3 million expatriates<\/a>.[19]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qatar is a high income economy and is a developed country, with the world’s third largest natural gas reserves<\/a> and oil reserves.[20]<\/a><\/sup> The country has the highest<\/a> per capita income<\/a> in the world. Qatar is classified by the UN as a country of very high human development and is the most advanced Arab state for human development.[21]<\/a><\/sup> Qatar is a significant power in the Arab world, supporting several rebel<\/a> groups during the Arab Spring<\/a> both financially and through its globally expanding media group, Al Jazeera Media Network<\/a>.[22]<\/a><\/sup>[23]<\/a><\/sup>[24]<\/a><\/sup> For its small size, Qatar has a lot of influence in the world, and has been identified as a middle power<\/a>.[25]<\/a><\/sup>[26]<\/a><\/sup> Qatar hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup<\/a>, becoming the first Arab country to do so.[27]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
